What is Classical Atelier Study? Click here for a description from Wikipedia “The key relationship within an atelier is the one between the painter/teacher and each student. A competent teacher can save a talented student years of misguided effort. During the foundation years, time is one of a student’s most precious commodities. Certain requirements are necessary for a successful transmission of the tradition from painter/teacher to student. The qualities a student needs to bring into an atelier include: the willingness to learn and follow instructions, a solid work ethic, self- motivation, courage, persistence and patience. Qualities of a competent painter/teacher include: an integrated knowledge and practice of the art, the wisdom to assign progressive studies appropriate to a students level of development, the ability to match presentation of the information with a student’s learning style, and the insight to provide a student with essential instruction as it is needed. If the transmission of knowledge and studio practices are successful a solid foundation will be established preparing the student to approach any creative project with competence.” Art Renewal Center

Is My Young Artist Ready for Classical Art Classes? Here are some guidelines to help you (We offer classes to ages 8 and up but sometimes young artists aren’t quite ready at 8 and occasionally even 7 year olds are ready.) Able to retain attention, interest and focus while staying in one’s seat for 1.5 hours? Understands basic concepts like one thing being half the size of another etc? Or one width stacking 2 times, like blocks, into the height of another thing. Demonstrates interest in art and drawing? Is open to the idea of looking at something and drawing with a desire to be fairly accurate, instead of only imaginative drawing? Has a desire to learn something new? Ability to follow directions? Whether your child is older or younger than 8, I am most interested in knowing that you see the possibility for these things being present or potentially present in your young artist.
